The appeal and diversity of Downtown Las Vegas is nothing short of legendary. It’s an art and culture hub, a food and beverage mecca, a living tribute to the Las Vegas of yesteryear, and much, much more. To put it in the simplest of terms, it has something for just about everyone. Indeed, you don’t have to look too far to find things to do when visiting Downtown Las Vegas, especially if you’re drawn to art.
As the downtown area has evolved since it revitalization in the mid-1990’s, it has become the home to an ever-growing and dynamic hub of the arts that rivals that which is found in some of the world’s larger cities. Downtown Las Vegas now features the Fremont East Entertainment District, hip art galleries, stores, studios, and Symphony Park’s mammoth Smith Center for Performing Arts.
However, if you want to see some of the best and most unique art the downtown area has to offer, then you’ll want to visit these attractions during your next visit:
• 18b Arts District – located just south of the downtown area is the 18b Arts District, the cultural epicenter of the ever-expanding Las Vegas art scene. As one of the city’s oldest areas, the 18-block area is bordered by Colorado Ave., Hoover Ave., Commerce St., and Las Vegas Blvd. What was once a rundown, almost completely abandoned area is now the home to antique shops, artists and art galleries, bohemian bars, cool cafes, and retro boutiques.
• Downtown Art Alley – this is the downtown area’s newest community space and is a 10,000 square foot T-shaped alley situated between Carson Avenue to Fremont Street and 6th Street to Las Vegas Boulevard. This was once a wasted space that is now a thriving area of interactive family-friendly experiences that include art, education, and music. Former homeless veterans tend the garden planters while the walls are covered with vibrant murals created by many local artists.
• Mural Art Walk – whether self-guided or in a group tour setting, this is a colorful trek past dozens of vibrant wall murals created by a number of the city’s most notable artists. Beautiful facades among hidden alleyways in the newly revitalized Fremont East District are the highlight of this 8-block walk between Fremont Street to Ogden Avenue and 6th to 7th Streets. You should participate in the Mural Art Walk every day so often as new pieces are popping up all the time.
